Roman Marble Head of Silenus

Height: 13 in. (33 cm).

description

An ancient Roman large marble head of Silenus, companion of Dionysus, bald with horse ears, prominent brow and beard of thick curls; a garland of grape leaves and clusters around his head.

Silenus was a semi-divine follower of Dionysus, usually depicted as bald and fat with a squat nose.  He was the oldest and wisest of the God of Wine's retinue. He was usually drunk and had to be supported by satyrs or carried on a donkey.
