William Garrett Van Zandt was the son of Thomas Kirby Van Zandt (1814-1886), who was a prominent Albany artist and painted well-known horses and Jockeys of wealthy New Yorkers. William continued to paint in a similar style of his father, executing his works with great attention to his subject's anatomy. The Van Zandt's were both prolific artists and their works are represented in many museums, institutions and private collections.
