A George I Antique Irish Silver Cup

A George I Antique Irish Silver Cup

Height: 9 5/8"

description

One of the finest and boldest pieces of Irish silver we've had in many years - a colossus by the great Dublin silversmith Anthony Stanley who was, with Thomas Bolton, one of the two great silversmiths of early Ireland. Among his finest surviving pieces are a magnificent and large set of four candlesticks of 1698, formerly the property of the Duke of Leeds and now in a private collection in New York.

The arms are probably those of Rodolphus Greene (b. 1664-?) of Kilmanahan Castle, county Waterford. He married Mary Carrey in 1694 and was the High Sheriff of county Waterford in 1717. His father, Godfrey Greene, had purchased the estate in 1678 and left it to Rodolphus, his third son, the marriages of his first two sons having apparently displeased him. Rodolphus in turn left the estate to his third son Rodolphus (1707-1759) who was High Sheriff of Waterford in 1744. The castle of Kilmanahan is now a ruin, but the carved family crest still remains above one of the doorways.
