A Namban Bible Stand (Shokendai)
description
Exhib.: "Des Samouraïs aux Mangas", Missions Etrangeres de Paris, Paris 2024 (cat. no. 38)
This rare Bible stand bears the insignia of the Society of Jesus. Commissioned by Jesuit missionaries for devotional use, this portable folding lectern combines Baroque influences from Goa with an Islamic articulated mechanism.
Due to the persecution of Christians under Tokugawa Iemitsu (1623-1651), few examples of such nanban liturgical lacquers have survived. This piece exemplifies the cross-cultural exchange between East and West during Japan’s Momoyama Period (1573-1615). Similar examples may be found at the Nanban Bunkanan Museum, Osaka, the MNAA, Lisbon, the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales, Madrid, and the Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts.
