Two varieties of male hummingbirds appear to spar nearby–the horned sungem found in Brazil, and a rufous-crested coquette, native to Bolivia and Peru.

Martin Johnson Heade painted the present work in the less typical vertical format, featuring a vibrantly hued orchid in the lower right, the Cattleya labiata native to Brazil.
