George Inness’ On the Hudson was painted in 1878 during the period the artist created his most picturesque landscapes. It is a view looking east across the Hudson River toward the area just south of Poughkeepsie and is the first of three oils of this subject and the artist’s only etching. It is also the most spontaneous work of the group, conveying Inness’ initial imaginative engagement with the scene in which he evoked its essence with a freshness of touch. Viewers are first drawn deep into the scene by the artist’s detailed description of the distant boats after which they are engaged by his painterly skill at poetically suggesting the landscape and figures.
On the Hudson was in the private collection of Inness’ biographer Leroy Ireland. It is in original condition and has a period American frame from the 1870’s.
