John Frederick Herring Sr. (British, 1795 – 1865)
A Brace of Setters in an Extensive Landscape
Oil on canvas
Unframed: 22 x 30 inches; Framed: 26 ½ x 34 ½ inches
Signed J.F. Herring and dated 1828
Venturing away from racing, fox hunting, and farmyard compositions, Herring Sr., also a master of the English landscape tradition, has placed two English Setters one on point and one backing pheasants to the left fore. These two-gun dogs are well-formed, anatomically and attitudinally. The resulting canvas is endearingly elegant.
